East Fork Stream Splash

Batavia, Ohio.  Looking for a fun way to spend a fall day with your family?  Join the Clermont Park District, the Clermont Soil and Water Conservation District, and the Office of Environmental Quality on Saturday, September 25, 2010, for a fun and free day of canoeing and learning about the creatures that call the East Fork of the Little Miami River home.  “These events are part of the Great Outdoor Weekend being held throughout Greater Cincinnati,” said Clermont Parks’ Chief Naturalist Keith Robinson.  “Both of our local events, the canoe trip and the stream splash, begin at Sycamore Park in Batavia.

“Families can register for a naturalist guided canoe trip down the East Fork of the Little Miami,” said Director of the Clermont Soil and Water Conservation District Paul Berringer.  “Children as young as four can take part in the canoe trips that will run from 9:30 in the morning until 2 in the afternoon; we could see osprey, herons, and even a beaver as we paddle along the gentle waters.  This is an excellent opportunity for those who have never before tried canoeing.”  You must call (513) 732-7075 by September 17, 2010 to sign up for the canoe trip.

From 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on September 25, you can also grab a net to search for some of the macro invertebrates that live in the water near the park. Ohio EPA will also be electrofishing to show participants what kinds of fish live in the river.  Identifying the different species of fish and macroinvertebrates calling the East Fork River home will tell us whether or not the water quality is in good condition.

“This is a great way to spend a fun and educational day with your family,” said Robinson.  “This event should be one that will have you looking at water and nature in a different way.”  For additional information about the Great Outdoor Weekend, visit the Web site www.parks.ClermontCountyOhio.gov.
